Devices and activations

Limit how many machines can use a license and let customers move their license between devices.

How device limits work

Each license has a device limit. Every device that activates takes one slot, and when all slots are full, new activations fail with activation_limit_reached. Activating a device that's already active doesn't take another slot.

A good default is 1–3 devices for personal licenses and the seat count for team licenses.

Freeing a slot

  • From your app: call deactivate with the license key and device ID. Put this in your app's settings so customers can manage it themselves.
  • From the dashboard: open the license, find the device under Activations, and deactivate it. Handy when a customer's old machine is gone.

Either way, the slot is free immediately.

Checking a specific device

When you include device.id in a validation, the license must be active on that device. Without it, validation only checks the license itself. Include it whenever you can.

Seeing who's using what

The Activations page lists every device across your licenses, with its name, platform, app version, and when it was last seen. When a customer hits their limit you also get an activation.limit_reached webhook, which is a good moment to offer more seats.
